School Spotlight: Atlantic Technical College

Once a month we highlight a different NCRA-approved school. The court reporter programs offered at these schools have met the General Requirements and Minimum Standards established by the Council on Approved Student Education of NCRA. This is a chance for members to get to know these programs and hear from their students and teachers.

Atlantic Technical College (ATC), founded in 1973, currently serves more than 6,000 students on two campuses. The college offers more than 30 certificates and applied technology diploma programs. The court reporting program is located alongside Atlantic Technical High School in Coconut Creek, Fla., and they share a campus where all students benefit from the cheerful pink buildings, lush palm trees, and treats from the culinary program.

What is the mission of your school?

ATC promotes excellence in academic, career, and technical studies in order to prepare students to enter and remain competitive in a global workforce. ATC has a strong alumni community which continues to follow our students and be available for them throughout their careers.

The mission of ATC is to provide state-of-the-art instructional systems technologies and quality teaching techniques to educate students in the fields of realtime captioning and court reporting. ATC strives to educate today’s students to succeed in tomorrow’s world.

What sets your school apart from other court reporting/captioning programs?

ATC is celebrating 35 years of being an accredited court reporting program!

ATC’s instructors are NCRA-certified court reporting instructors and are also recipients of the distinguished and prestigious Florida Court Reporters Association (FCRA) Arlene P. Sommers Award for outstanding achievement in education. ATC’s program is NCRA- and FCRA-approved, as well as approved by the Department of Education in the state of Florida. We hold the highest standards for our college programs and are one of the top schools in the state of Florida and the nation, rated an A+ technical college.

We offer both online and classroom delivery environments – days and evenings – Mondays through Saturdays. ATC offers new enrollment in January 2022, Summer 2022, and the Fall and Winter terms.

ATC works closely with the court reporting industry in Florida to stay on the cutting edge of education, internships, and placement for our students. ATC places major emphasis on high skill/high wage/high demand occupational programs that are designed to meet the current and future needs of business, industry, and the community we serve. ATC has a successful graduation rate with our graduates working as court reporters and captioners in Florida and major cities across the United States.

What do your students love about the program?

We are celebrating our latest graduate this October, Zoe Zimmerman, who is entering her career with U.S. Legal in Orlando, Fla. Zoe completed our program in 26 months online; she thought she could, so she did! Zoe did it with vigor and valor and during COVID-19. We are extremely proud of her and feel privileged to have had her as our student. Zoe will truly be an asset to our professional court reporting community.

Zoe Zimmerman

Zoe had this to say upon graduating:

“I loved being in the court reporting program at Atlantic Technical College. I never imagined I would enjoy a court reporting program as much as I did this one. And I achieved my goals in 26 months. It was a learning experience I will always treasure. The instructors at ATC were always there to guide me through every step of the way and, with their guidance, I have transformed into the court reporter I dreamed I would become. I am very thankful for my time spent at ATC with my instructors, the fellowship with other students, and the entire family at ATC!”

Thanks to Deborah E. Berg, Business IT Department Chair and Web Development Instructor, Atlantic Technical College, in Coconut Creek, Fla., for providing these School Spotlight responses.
