NCRA A to Z Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand Fact Sheet

WHO: If you know someone who might be a good stenographer, recommend this program to them!

WHAT: NCRA offers a free six-week online course to learn the basics of steno writing to discover if a career in captioning or court reporting is the right career for you.

The goal of the program is to introduce the basics of the steno machine to help prospective stenographers gauge their interest and determine if pursuing further education is the right move. They will learn the letters A to Z on the steno machine and the numbers 0 to 9. They will also practice putting together some letters to create basic words.

NCRA offers both live and asynchronous training at various intervals throughout the year. Watch the JCR Weekly or visit DiscoverSteno.org to find out more about the latest offerings. In addition, some NCRA members offer in-person training.

Attendees of the NCRA A to Z Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand program get a “free test drive” while learning to write letters on a steno machine or by using a steno program on an iPad. Getting a hands-on introduction to steno gives prospective students the opportunity to learn more about the professions of court reporting and captioning in a short time frame with minimal financial investment
