Our stenography students need you! Volunteer to be a mentor

NCRA’s Virtual Mentor Program (VMP) has matched thousands of students with mentors over the years. However, with the increase in online education, we have seen an influx of students requesting mentors and a decline in the number of mentors available. Several states have also recently disbanded their student mentorship programs, which greatly impacted the number of students awaiting a mentorship match.

Currently there are 40 students waiting for a mentor through NCRA’s mentoring program with up to a four-month waiting period. As a result, NCRA’s VMP will now be limited to students who have passed at least one test at 120 wpm.

“As much as we want to help every stenography student, we have a limited number of mentors and staff time available, and our resources need to be concentrated on the higher-speed students at this time,” said Cynthia Ducar, NCRA’s Professional Development Manager, who oversees the program.

If you have valuable experiences, insights, and connections to share, please consider becoming a mentor. Your guidance could change the trajectory of a student’s life, offering them the confidence and knowledge they need to succeed. Whether you have an hour a week or just occasional availability, your support can make a lasting impact. Step up, share your wisdom, and help shape the next generation.

Join the NCRA Virtual Mentor Program, and make a difference! Mentors are also eligible for PDCs* through the program.

*PDCs are Professional Development Credits, a subset of Continuing Education Units, which can be applied to the overall CEU requirement for maintaining certification. PDCs may be granted for qualifying activities that do not include class time, such as transcribing documents for the NCRF Oral Histories Project. Most individuals are limited to 1.0 PDC per cycle toward their continuing education requirements.
