New professionals: Deadlines approaching for $20,000 in grants

The National Court Reporters Foundation (NCRF) is proud to champion its members with grants that support their professional growth and success. The New Professionals Grant awards funds to new professionals in their first year of work, and the Michelle Grimes Memorial Grant and the Monyeen Black Memorial Grant are open to new professionals who hold the RSR or the RPR certification and are in their first two years of reporting or captioning. The first deadline is June 6.

New Professionals Grant

The New Professionals Grant is available for working court reporters or captioners in their first year out of school. The grant helps support start-up expenses such as purchasing software and earning credentials. Applicants must be NCRA members, provide a letter of recommendation from an employer, and submit an essay on the topic: “What impact has the stenographic court reporting/captioning profession had on your life. Why are you passionate about your future as a court reporter or captioner?”

This year two first-place winners will be awarded $4,000 each and two second-place winners will be awarded $2,000 each. Full criteria, an application, and a list of past recipients can be found on the grant page. The deadline to apply is June 6.

Michelle Grimes Memorial Grant

The Michelle Grimes Memorial Grant honors Michelle Grimes, a stenographer from Illinois who participated in the 100-day practice group hosted by Rich Germosen, FAPR, RDR, CRR, on Facebook. A fundraiser was created as a tribute to her dedication.

The grant is open to new professionals who hold the RSR or the RPR certification, are in their first two years of reporting or captioning, provide a letter of recommendation, and answer a short essay question: “Explain how you believe the service of stenographic court reporting contributes to fair trials, equality, justice, and other legal events.”

Two grants of $2,000 each will be awarded. Applications for the grant will be accepted until June 13. Find full grant requirements and an application here.

Monyeen Black Memorial Grant

Monyeen Black

The Monyeen Black Memorial Grant honors the memory of Monyeen Black, a passionate stenographer and beloved member of Germosen’s practice group, who passed away in January 2021. A fundraiser launched in her memory continues to support aspiring professionals.

As part of the submission process, applicants will be required to submit an essay on the topic: “How, when, and why did you realize that a career in stenographic court reporting or captioning was right for you?” Applicants must also hold an RSR or RPR, be an NCRA member, and submit a letter of recommendation.

Full grant requirements and an application can be found on the grant web page. Two grants of $2,000 each will be awarded. The deadline to apply is June 13.
