Student Spotlight: Staying local (this time)

Kari Lindberg

Kari Lindberg, a student at Oklahoma State University, has already traveled to Las Vegas, Orlando, and Houston to attend past NCRA Conference & Expos. But next month, when she heads to the Conference in Minneapolis, she won’t have to travel far. It’s just down the road from her home in Shoreview, Minn.

UTS | What do you love about stenography?

KL | I love how stenography has so many applications and is used for captioning, CART, depositions, and court reporting. Utilizing the same fascinating machine and our own specialized language, we are able to work in a variety of fields and various locations.

UTS | What do you find is the most challenging part of studying in an online program? What’s the best part about it?

KL | I think the most challenging part of an online program is having to adapt and form friendships with other peers and classmates online instead of in person. Having study groups on Zoom has been helpful to form connections. The best part about it is the flexibility. I also like being able to access a library of practice dictations that my instructor, Allie Hall, records for her students.

UTS | Tell us about your previous experiences at NCRA Conferences.

KL | This will be my fourth NCRA Conference. I have loved attending the Conferences and have found them invaluable. It is so motivating and encouraging to meet other reporters and to be able to attend the various sessions. I recommend bringing a notebook and taking lots of notes. You learn so much and will leave with a renewed passion for what we do! Attending the Conferences was one of the best decisions I made while in school.

UTS | Are you planning to attend this year’s Conference in Minneapolis?

KL | Yes! I wouldn’t miss it! I am so excited for it to be held in Minneapolis and live pretty close to where it is being held. I hope everyone has a great time and gets a chance to take in a local activity or restaurant.

Visit Paisley Park, which is Prince’s estate. Go ride the FlyOver America ride at the Mall of America. On the same street as the hotel, there is a row of restaurants. Check out the patio and lawn bowling at Brit’s Pub or visit Sushi Train, where the sushi rolls by you. I recommend it for a quick meal and it’s right by the hotel.

The News Room (the restaurant is written this way even though I want to write it as “The Newsroom”) and The Local are also great. When you enter The News Room, you will be greeted with a typewriter at the entrance and lots of fun decor.

UTS | What is your dream job? Where do you see yourself in five years?

KL | That’s a great question. I started out thinking that I would work in captioning or CART as I have taken American Sign Language. After doing some shadowing in the courtroom and depositions, I have learned that I enjoy those areas of work as well. I’ll report back in a few years and let you know!

UTS | Cake or pie?

KL | That’s a tough one, but I’d have to go with pie. French silk pie is my favorite.

UTS | Anything else you’d like to share?

KL | While in school, remember that everyone progresses at their own pace. There may be students that graduate faster than you,but keep at it. Celebrate their wins with them and continue running your own race. You will get there!
