The Mississippi Court Reporters Association (MCRA) held its Fall Conference in Natchez, Miss., bringing together court reporting professionals from across the state for essential discussions on emerging technologies and legislative developments affecting the profession. The conference featured speakers including National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) President Cindy Isaacsen, RPR, MCRA President Candace O’Barr Jones, and NCRA State Government Relations Manager Colin Brehm, who participated on a panel focused on Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI), the potential dangers of AI in legal proceedings, and a national legislative update.
“It was an honor to be in Natchez and participate in the MCRA Fall Conference,” said Isaacsen. “I want to thank MCRA for the invitation and the opportunity to connect with Mississippi’s court reporting professionals.”
The timing and location of the conference proved particularly advantageous, as trial and appellate judges were simultaneously holding their own conference at the Natchez Convention Center. This convergence created unique networking opportunities and fostered valuable dialogue between the judiciary and court reporting professionals during a reception held after the panel. Officials and freelance court reporters from throughout Mississippi attended the event, demonstrating the profession’s commitment to staying informed about technological advances and their implications for legal proceedings.
The panel discussion on AI addressed critical concerns facing the court reporting profession as AI technologies increasingly intersect with legal documentation and transcription services. By examining the potential dangers of AI in legal proceedings alongside legislative updates, the conference provided attendees with crucial insights into protecting the integrity and accuracy of the legal record while navigating an evolving technological landscape.
Isaacsen concluded the panel with a reminder to those in attendance that court reporters remain the essential guardians of the record, ensuring accuracy and integrity in our legal system.
