Repaying a loved profession by giving back

Geannell Adams

It is estimated that some 75 million Americans volunteer in some capacity on an annual basis, either in person or virtually, thanks to technology and the internet.

With April marking national National Volunteer Month, the JCR reached out to some of the NCRA members who support the work of the Association and the National Court Reporters Foundation (NCRF) through their gift of volunteering to learn more about why they do what they do.

Why?

For NCRA member Dr. Geanell Adams, FAPR, RMR, CCR, CRC, CRI, an official state court reporter, broadcast captioner, and CART captioner from Terry, Miss., volunteering is deeply personal and has given her not only the opportunity to give back to a profession she loves, but has also provided her with an array of benefits ranging from professional growth, leadership, lifelong learning, and meaningful connections. Adams, who has served on a number of committees, currently services on NCRA’s Written Knowledge Test Committee and the Council on Approved Student Education (CASE).

“My commitment to national service allows me to contribute in ways that support reporters across the country,” Adams said. “The greatest personal benefit I receive from volunteering is the quiet fulfillment that comes from assisting others and helping the Association meet its goals. Much of volunteer work happens behind the scenes, but knowing that your efforts contribute to something larger than yourself is incredibly rewarding.”

Read more about why NCRA members give back by volunteering for their Association and Foundation in the April issue of the JCR magazine.

Ready to volunteer?

NCRA is currently seeking members to volunteer for committees for the 2026-2027 year. If you want to be one of our treasured volunteers who moves the court reporting, captioning, and legal videography professions forward, go to NCRA.org/Committees and fill out the Committee Volunteer Form.

Committees begin their work immediately following the NCRA Conference & Expo, so we are seeking volunteers to be considered by the NCRA Board of Directors prior to the Conference happening this July.
