NCRA’s Membership, Marketing & Outreach Committee (MMO) will hold its sixth “Court Reporters Craft” Zoom Friday, April 24, at 8 p.m. Eastern and you’re invited!
Join your colleagues for an event where you can get crafty while listening to music and hearing from three incredible CART captioners in between songs. Registration is free but you must sign up to join.
“Whether you like to paint, sew, crochet, cross stitch, build LEGOs, or anything else, we invite you to join us for a casual and fun evening. All are welcome, both members and nonmembers,” said MMO Co-chair Chris DeGrazio, a court reporter from Fort Pierce, Fla.
Each event has a specific focus and this month’s event will address CART captioning. Scheduled panelists include Carilyn Cipolla, a realtime CART captioner from Merced, Calif.; Thomas Herman, a CART captioner from Portland, Ore.; and Jo Gayle, RPR, CRR, CRC, a CART captioner from Chicago, Ill.
If you have questions for any of the panelists, attendees can use this form to send them in advance.
“I found the career of my dreams in CART captioning after transitioning out of a previous ill-fitting career,” said Cipolla. “I’m passionate about helping people who might find stenography fun and fulfilling know how to succeed at becoming a clean realtime stenographer.”
“As a stenographic CART captioner, I often work in silos,” said Herman. “Speaking or attending virtual events with other professionals helps us feel connected, learn from one another, and be in community in a casual setting. No commute required!”
“I’ve been a reporter for 46 years and a CART captioner for the last 20-plus of those years,” said Gayle. “So I think I’ve gained some wisdom in the field that I’m very happy to pass on to others, especially students and newbies.”
The MMO Committee is proud to offer the Court Reporters Craft events free to members and nonmembers, and it is part of the committee’s charge to spread information and education about the profession.
“Court Reporters Craft is a testament to Chris’s [DeGrazio] vision for building community in our field. By creating this inclusive and welcoming space where it is open to members and nonmembers, he brings court reporters, CART captioners, and students together each month, and those connections are what strengthen our profession,” said MMO Co-chair Darlene Develin, an official reporter from Patchogue, N.Y. “I’m honored to contribute as Chris’s MMO cochair, and I hope attendees gain both insight into our field and a sense of belonging.”
