Call for 2023 DSA nominations: Recognize that special professional

Has a peer or colleague gone above and beyond to support NCRA and the court reporting and captioning professions? Consider nominating them for NCRA’s 2023 Distinguished Service Award (DSA), the highest honor NCRA can bestow on a member. The award winner will be recognized at the 2023 NCRA Conference & Expo in Houston, Texas, July 27-30. Nominations open Nov. 1.

The DSA recognizes the distinguished work and service by an individual member for the benefit of the court reporting and captioning professions, including service to NCRA as a member, a committee member, a director, or an officer of the Association. Nominations for the DSA may be submitted by NCRA voting members or by affiliated court reporting associations. Candidates must be a Registered Member of NCRA in good standing, a Registered Retired Member, or Registered Retired Lifetime Member who was a member in good standing upon retirement.

The 2022 DSA was awarded to Sue A. Terry, FAPR, RPR, CRR, CRC, a court reporter, captioner, and CART provider from Springfield, Ohio. She was also awarded the 2022 National Court Reporters Foundation’s Jim Bouley Family Lifetime Award for Altruism, making her the first person to receive both honors in the same year. Terry was honored at a special awards ceremony held at the 2022 NCRA Conference & Expo in Orlando, Fla. Read more.

Looking back on her career, Terry shared her passion for service. “There are so many opportunities we all have every single day,” she said. “I think one way we need to advocate is to not be afraid to have dialogue with decision-makers. A great way to prepare yourself and gain confidence to do that is to participate in your state and national organizations. Arm yourself with as much information as you can gather to have good dialogue at every opportunity that presents itself. Look for them. Volunteer for them. Get better with each additional encounter. Then share your techniques and experiences with other reporters to encourage them to do the same,” she added.

“Serving the various roles in different professional associations has first and foremost provided me with strong friendships, and through those friendships your own professional knowledge base just grows in all aspects.”
