In celebration of Court Reporting & Captioning Week, NCRA President Cindy L. Isaacsen, RPR, an official court reporter from Shawnee, Kan., shared insights and personal experiences about her nearly 40 years working as a freelancer early in her career and her current position with the 10th Judicial District Court in Olathe, Kan., with podcaster Sandy Collins of iHeart Cinci in an episode that aired Feb. 18.
Isaacsen shared with Collins her journey through court reporting starting with: “Well, I started working in Texas before moving to Tennessee, Germany, and then Louisiana.
“Now I’m here in Kansas and have had an exciting career. Every day is a new day. You learn so many things. It’s not like you’re doing the same thing over and over and over again. You know, you may be taking the testimony of, you know, a psychiatrist. You may be taking a testimony of a guy who builds a house, an electrician. You’re always learning something from somebody.”
She also talked about the different jobs court reporters and captioners can have and the roles they play in each, as well as the many opportunities that exit.
During the interview, Collins asked if court reporters working in the courtroom experience the same trauma that jurors do in certain cases and how they cope with it. Isaacsen shared information about NCRF’s Peer-to-Peer Support sessions that provide members with a safe and secure platform to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Isaacsen also shared information about the NCRA A to Z® Intro to Machine Shorthand program, her thoughts on the role of AI in the judicial process, and more.
