JCR | How did you hear about court reporting?

SP | I first heard about court reporting through my family. My dad, my Granny, my uncle, and two of my dad’s cousins all worked in the field. After my dad left the Army in 1984, he and Granny decided to pursue reporting together. Granny attended court reporting school in Texas while my dad taught himself during his final years of service. He was inspired by the success of his uncle and cousins in Texas. I chose to follow in their footsteps and went directly into captioning after graduating from The Denver Academy of Court Reporting in 2004.

JCR | Why did you want to serve on the Board?

SP | I wanted to serve on the NCRA Board because I saw a need for a strong representative voice for captioners. I work closely with technology and have experienced both the positive and negative impacts it has on our profession. My goal is to make sure every facet of stenography has a seat at the table and that our profession continues to thrive in a rapidly changing environment.

JCR | What’s one thing that people probably don’t already know about you?

SP | One thing people may not already know about me is that I have a tendency to take in strays. Sometimes they have fur, and sometimes they do not. My family likes to say I always seem to have room in my heart and in my home for the unexpected.
