JCR | How did you hear about court reporting?
KL | My mom and my aunt were both court reporters, so you could say it’s in my blood! My cousin is a captioner, and my sister started court reporting school after completing the NCRA A to Z® Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand program. I was a horrible court reporter, a natural writer, but hated the backend work. Captioning is perfect for me, providing daily satisfaction, a love of writing on my machine, and aligns with my core values.
JCR | Why did you want to serve on the Board?
KL | Because I can never truly give back what this profession has given me, serving on the Board feels like one small way to try. I love hearing from members, and I’m super excited about what’s going to come out of the Member Survey. I was also fortunate to be a recipient of the Training for Realtime Writers Act, and that training completely changed my life. With my fellow Board members, I hope to help others experience that same kind of growth — both professionally and personally. And if you know me, you know I’ll be the one cheering you on with a big “Woohoo!” to celebrate your accomplishments.
JCR | What’s one thing that people probably don’t already know about you?
KL | My husband and I are high school sweethearts, married for over 25 years. My personal goal is to make Brian laugh at least once every single day — it’s hands down my favorite part of each day.
*At one point, I had an Inactive Membership, and that was such a gift, allowing me to stay connected to the profession during a time when I wasn’t working, while still keeping up with best practices and new technology.
