Theft from court office a reminder to back up

The July 15 police note on 19 Action News Digital Team’s website should serve as a reminder to court reporters everywhere: Always back up your files. The report said that a laptop computer and jump drive, which contained information pertaining to ongoing cases, were stolen from the court reporter’s office at the Summit County Courthouse in Akron, Ohio, on July 10. The theft was caught on tape.

“I back up everything every day, in the office and online, then take my backup device home with me every night,” says veteran reporter Jerry Kelley, RPR, CRR, of McKinney, Texas. Kelley is also a member of NCRA’s Technology Review Committee. “It is incumbent on all court reporters to keep their files safe and secure. But the easiest thing to remember is: Back up, backup, and back up.”
