Destination Days in Wisconsin: A virtual high school, a real-world career

By Lisa Dennison

I had the chance to join Destinations Career Academy of Wisconsin (DCA)last month for a virtual career exploration experience with their high school students. It turned out to be a fun and energizing experience where I could speak not only about the NCRA A to Z® Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand program, but about the profession as a whole.

DCA is a public charter high school that educates students all over Wisconsin. This virtual school hosts “Destination Days” each month, focusing on one of the school’s six different career pathways. In May DCA highlighted their Law and Criminal Justice Pathway. Stacey Armitage, DCA’s Work-Based and Career Learning Counselor, contacted NCRA to invite us to talk about stenography.

Presenting via the school’s platform, Engageli, I was able to explain how stenographers capture the spoken word in real time and the different paths the profession can take. The conversation was lively and full of great questions. It was exciting to connect with Wisconsin students and see their curiosity sparked as they learned about a career that blends language, technology, and problem-solving skills in a unique way. We hope to be invited in the future to continue the conversation!
