The recent loss of a young court reporter to an alleged domestic violence act has prompted several sponsors and NCRA to help elevate the discussion about this issue and to those in need so future tragedies can be avoided. To that end, we are offering a free 90-minute webinar on Oct. 22 from 7-8:30 p.m. Eastern.
Inside the Cycle: Understanding Domestic Violence and its Lasting Impact will be led by therapist Bev Perez, MSW, a former police officer who is certified in peer support and has specialized training in trauma in work experiences. Perez will provide insights and guidance on the hard discussions that surround the issue of domestic violence.
If you have ever attended an NCRA Peer-to-Peer Support session, then you know that Perez is passionate about creating community that supports one another.
In this webinar, Perez will dive deep into the behavioral, psychological, and systemic cycles of domestic violence, including a look beyond the surface of physical abuse to examine the calculated tactics of coercive control, isolation, and financial manipulation that trap victims within the cycle.
The session will analyze the long-term trauma experienced by survivors and explain how this trauma directly alters their communication style, memory recall, and behavior on the witness stand. Finally, because documenting these intense narratives takes a heavy emotional toll, the presentation addresses the critical need for self-preservation.
Participants will gain practical insights into the mechanics of abuse, tools to decipher trauma-influenced testimony, and strategies to guard against vicarious trauma.

According to the National Institutes for Health, family and domestic violence affects an estimated 10 million people every year; as many as one in four women and one in nine men are victims of domestic violence. Virtually all healthcare professionals will at some point evaluate or treat a patient who is a victim of domestic or family violence.
