Chicago job vacancies rise at the fastest rate in court reporting

MacComac College, Chicago, Ill., issued a press release on July 31 urging budding court reporters to head to Chicago where a wealth of job opportunities in the profession exists. The press release cites the Industry Outlook Report by Ducker Worldwide commissioned by NCRA and notes that by 2018, there will be a need for 1,900 court reporters to fill vacant positions. MacCormac College is the only court reporting program located in the city of Chicago.

Article notes Illinois courtrooms may face shortage of court reporters

The Clinton Herald posted an article on Aug. 1 that focused on the shortage of court reporters affecting the courts across Illinois. According to the article, 42 court reporter vacancies exist throughout the state with an immediate need to fill 20 of those positions. The remaining vacancies won’t be filled until a state budget is passed, according to the article.

Court reporting job opportunities in New York

NYThe filing period for the senior court reporter examinations for the New York State Unified Court System (both open-competitive and promotional) is now open. Registration ends April 22, and the exams will be administered statewide on June 13. Register for the exams here.

Sign up for the New York state civil service test to be qualified for court reporting employment opportunities

The New York State Office of Court Administration is offering state-wide civil service tests for two different levels of court reporters. The lower court reporter test’s sign-up or filing period is Feb. 5 to March 11, and the test will be given on April 25.  The New York Supreme Court test’s filing period is March 19 to April 22, and that test will be given on June 13.

“Both of these tests create civil service lists that are used for a period of three to four years, so it is imperative to get on the list for employment if you are interested in working in the New York court system,” says Stephen A. Zinone, RPR, NCRA’s President-elect and an official working at the Ontario County Courthouse in New York.

Shortage of court reporters in British Virgin Islands courts

Officials from both the Magistrates’ Court and the Supreme Court of the British Virgin Islands are asking for additional staffers to help address an increased workload, according to an article posted Jan. 19 by The BVI Beacon, based on the 2015 Standing Finance Committee report. The article notes that acting Supreme Court Registrar Erica Smith-Penn said that her department could use two more court reporters and a scopist.
