School Spotlight: South Coast College

Once a month we highlight a different NCRA-approved school. The court reporter programs offered at these schools have met the General Requirements and Minimum Standards established by the Council on Approved Student Education of NCRA. This is a chance for members to get to know these programs and hear from their students and teachers.

South Coast College, now located in Orange, Calif., was founded 60 years ago as the Stenotype School of Long Beach. In addition to a court reporting program, the school houses paralegal and medical assistant programs. The school is located in a mission-style building close to the freeway for easy commuting access. Because of the large size of the program, there are at least a dozen classrooms and additional rooms for student use. There is an abundance of computer labs, a mock trial room, and a well-stocked library for student use.

What is the mission of your school?

The mission of South Coast College is to provide quality education and training in a caring, student-oriented environment to individuals who are highly motivated and who wish to improve their lives.

What sets your school apart from other court reporting programs?

South Coast College is the only accredited private court reporting school in California and the only California school recognized by the National Court Reporters Association. South Coast College is widely known for having a long tradition of producing excellent court and deposition reporters and captioners. Most of the instructors are South Coast College alumni who have dedicated their lives to helping change the lives of others. Although they have worked in the field of reporting, their passion is in training others.

Many of our alumni are entrepreneurs who have their own court reporting, captioning, and scoping agencies and embrace our students by reaching out to the school and making their resources and services available and by providing our graduates with hands-on training to help them transition into the various fields. Graduates are assured that they have the support of the alumni whether they wish to go into court, work in the deposition arena, or use their skills in captioning.

South Coast College has a lovely campus near Disneyland and has an online hybrid program that has been approved by the State of California and the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).
