Putting technology to work: Tech sessions to look for at the NCRA Conference & Expo

Court reporters, captioners, and legal videographers know that keeping up with changes in technology is a key to success. To that end, the NCRA Conference & Expo, happening in Bellevue, Wash., this July 16-18, offers many sessions on tech topics to keep you informed about the benefits and best practices when approaching the topic.

Here are a few sessions to look for:

Friday, July 17
2:45-3:45 p.m. Pacific

At the base of most people’s setups is their computer, and it’s not always easy to figure out which computer will work best for your hardware and software. If you’re in the market for a new computer and want to cut through the hype from computer marketers, consider attending “What a Smart Reporter Looks for in a Laptop” with Tim Falk, CLVS, owner of Integrity Video LLC.

Falks says: “Don’t let laptop marketing cost you thousands. Learn which laptop specifications actually impact CAT software performance, which ones don’t, and how to purchase a reliable, high-performance laptop without overspending.”

Saturday, July 18
8:30– 9:30 a.m. Pacific

Are you making the most of your computer once you have it? That is the question that will be explored by Jean Kim, RPR, and Merilee Johnson, RDR, CRR, CRC, in the session “It’s IN the Computer: Unlocking Hidden Windows Powers for Court Reporters.”

Kim says: “The session that Merilee and I have put together will show you features that are already ‘in’ your computer, just waiting to be activated.”

“Jean and I will talk about uncovering those hidden gems and turning them into everyday efficiencies,” adds Johnson. “Set it up once, forget about it, and let your computer handle it for you.”

Saturday, July 18
10– 11:15 a.m. Pacific

Returning for the fourth year is the NCRA Technology Committee’s fast-paced interactive trivia game. NCRA Technology Committee Chair Suzanne Trimble, RPR, CRR, one of the leaders for the session, explains: “Using the Kahoot! platform, you’ll put your knowledge to the test with questions covering troubleshooting computer and equipment issues, AI basics, keyboard shortcuts, cybersecurity, and other practical tech tips. Whether you’re a seasoned tech pro or just looking to sharpen your everyday technology skills, this engaging session is designed to help you work smarter, solve problems faster, and have a few laughs along the way. Join us for a fun, friendly competition—and see if you have what it takes to become the Tech Trivia Champion!” Before attending, make sure to download the Kahoots app from the Apple Store or Google Play store.

These sessions are just a preview of what awaits you at the NCRA Conference & Expo, July 16-18, in Bellevue, Wash. Check the online schedule or mobile app for full session descriptions and other Conference details.
