Entering the world of court reporting and captioning can feel both exhilarating and overwhelming, but NCRA’s A to Z® Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand program makes that first step a lot less intimidating, and a lot more exciting.
NCRA’s A to Z Program Coordinator, Lisa Dennison, chatted with Emily Chubb from North Salt Lake, Utah. Chubb was a recent participant in the A to Z Asynchronous Program, and she completed A to Z before starting her studies at the College of Court Reporting in March.
LD | Congratulations on completing the program! What were you doing before looking into court reporting?
EC | Before exploring court reporting as a career, I spent the past 15 years working in the beauty industry as a nail artist, so this truly feels like a complete 180.
LD | So what made you interested in court reporting and captioning as a whole?
EC | My initial interest in court reporting was sparked by my love of true crime (and my fair share of live Court TV). But as I researched further, I developed a deep appreciation for how essential court reporters are to the judicial system and to preserving history as a whole.
LD | How did you find out about NCRA and our A to Z program?
EC | I found out about the A to Z program after seeing a few court reporters talk about it on social media. Since it was a low-cost way to learn more about the field, I figured, why not give it a try?
LD | We are glad you found us and are continuing your studies after finishing the program! What are you most excited about? How do you think a career in court reporting will help you achieve your goals?
EC | Even though I’m super excited to start school, I’m even more excited about all the opportunities that will open up after I graduate. And I won’t lie — the idea of making a great income is definitely a bonus. But what I really love is that court reporting is a career where I can keep learning and growing. My dream career goal is to work on a case that receives national coverage — to be a part of something that changes history, hopefully for the better.
We wish Emily the best as she begins her journey! Her story offers a firsthand look at how we aim to open doors and build confidence for participants prior to enrollment in a school program. NCRA’s A to Z® Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand program offers the perfect place to begin for those interested in the profession.
