Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, has joined as a co-sponsor of H.R. 7997, the Research and Oversight of AI in Courts Act of 2026, legislation supported by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) aimed at studying the use and risks of artificial intelligence technologies in the nation’s courts.
This co-sponsorship was secured thanks to the efforts of NCRA Wisconsin members Michelle Gudex, RDR, CRR, CRC, CRI, and Erica Schueler, RPR, CRR, engaging directly with Rep. Grothman’s office as constituents.
Grothman, who represents Wisconsin’s Sixth Congressional District, also serves on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement and the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government.
The legislation would establish federal research and oversight mechanisms examining how AI is being implemented in judicial proceedings, with particular attention to accuracy, transparency, record preservation, and due process concerns.
Grothman’s support adds another member of the House Judiciary Committee to the bill’s list of co-sponsors as advocates work to build bipartisan backing ahead of anticipated committee consideration in both the House and Senate. Hearing dates have not yet been announced.
NCRA members interested in helping secure additional bipartisan co-sponsors are encouraged to contact the Association’s Government Relations Department. Securing continued bipartisan support will be critical to advancing the legislation through both Judiciary Committees and ultimately to final passage.
