2022 CASE and A to Z® Scholarships winners announced

NCRA has announced that the 2022 CASE Award of Excellence has been given to Lisa Jo Hubacher, RPR, CRI, a freelance court reporter and court reporting instructor at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wis.

The Council on Approved Student Education (CASE) Award of Excellence is conferred upon an outstanding educator. The recipient exemplifies dedication to students and extraordinary contributions to court reporter education. Nominees for the award must meet the following requirements:

CASE offers five scholarships each year. The top prize of $1,500 is the Sue Shelton White Scholarship, named in honor of Sue Shelton White. Four additional scholarships are available in the amounts of $250, $500, $750, and $1,000. To be eligible to apply, students must currently be attending an NCRA-approved court reporting program, have an exemplary academic record, and have passed one skills test writing 140-180 wpm at the time of submission. In addition, applicants must submit an essay on a topic chosen by CASE.

The following students are the 2022 recipients of the CASE Scholarships:

  • Jodie Carrico, from Clintonville, Wis., a student at Lakeshore Technical College in Cleveland, Wis., $1,500
  • Hayley Peters, from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, a student at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Alberta, Canada, $1,000
  • Emelyn Lih, from Astoria, N.Y., a student at Plaza College in Queens, N.Y., $750
  • Luisa Vertucci, from Hackensack, N.J., a student at Plaza College in Queens, N.Y., $500
  • Nicole Swanson, from Oyster Bay, N.Y., a student at Plaza College in Queens, N.Y., $250

The NCRA A to Z® Scholarship program was expanded this year from awarding 10 scholarships at $500 each to awarding 14 scholarships at $750 each. The increased number of awards was the result a unanimous decision by the NCRF Board of Trustees and a generous increase in donations. Qualified applicants must have completed the NCRA A to Z® Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand program as well as pass a Skills Test writing between 60 and 100 wpm, among other eligibility requirements. The 2022 recipients of $750 each are:

  • Jemima Almanrode, from Fort Collins, Colo., a student at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio
  • Vennecia Lopez, from Yuma, Ariz., a student at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio
  • Brooke Adams, from Altoona, Iowa, a student at Des Moines Area Community College in Des Moines, Iowa
  • Rachel Leon, from Mission Hills, Calif., a student at the Downey Adult School in Downey, Calif.
  • Jessi Norris, from Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, a student at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Alberta, Canada
  • Jordan Fair, from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, a student at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Alberta, Canada
  • Lucy Wilde, from Welling, Alberta, Canada, a student at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Alberta, Canada
  • Alexa Duran, from Forest Hills, N.Y., a student at Plaza College in Queens, N.Y.
  • Alexandra Simon, from Brooklyn, N.Y., a student at Plaza College in Queens, N.Y.
  • Marissa Javier, from Forest Hills, N.Y., a student at Plaza College in Queens, N.Y.
