School Spotlight: Green River College

What is the mission of your school?

The mission of Green River College in Auburn, Wash., is to: “Ensure student success through comprehensive educational programs and support services responsive to our diverse communities.”

Green River’s Court Reporting and Captioning program is dedicated to ensuring student success by providing 360-degree development of qualified graduates to be fully prepared for employment in industry. The program has a 45+ year successful history of educating and training quality realtime reporters and captioners. The program works closely with industry professionals in providing up-to-the-minute training that aligns with industry needs.

What is it that makes your program stand out from other programs?

Green River offers an applied baccalaureate degree, called a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree. This degree provides a distinctly unique educational pathway that prepares graduates to be successful in the challenging world of realtime reporting and captioning. Green River College’s BAS degree not only offers hands-on skill development, but also includes professional ethics, leadership, marketing/branding, and Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification prep courses.

The structure of this degree allows students to obtain an exceptionally rare yet affordable baccalaureate degree in the field of realtime reporting in approximately the same amount of time as the former associate degree along with additional financial aid opportunities to support student completion for students who are eligible. The degree is also structured so that former graduates and working professionals can attend Green River via online or hybrid courses to complete the BAS, which offers up to 45 credits for industry credentials.

Green River’s Court Reporting and Captioning program has offered live streaming online classes long before the COVID pandemic. Following the pandemic, the program looks forward to returning to offering its usual variety of modalities: on-campus, face-to-face classes as well as hybrid and fully online classes.
